Fate and Perseverance

Albeit being the first pioneer of organic coconut milk manufacture and export in Thailand, we humbly started back in the days when the concept of being organic was still in its infancy.

Application of chemical substances and techniques were dominant in our plantations, majorly in order to control and maintain consistency of productions. A plan to convert into organic was unprecedented, but as we believed, it was fate that brought about the righteous way of sustainable agriculture.

In 1997, our journey was challenged by economic instability and cash flow problem caused by the Asian financial crisis. The situation forced us to cut down costs for chemical supply and we were unable to put proper maintenance in place. The misfortune was coupled with the El Nino phenomenon which lengthened the depression. Our coconut farm was left untreated and abandoned in haunted condition.

After years of perseverance, the nature finally gifted us with wisdom of a lifetime. We discovered that coconut trees projected self-immunity and independently revived on its own without the use of chemical. We also believe that the economic difficulty and natural phenomenon were all part of our destiny. If we never fall, we wouldn’t know how to go higher. These incidents helped us ignite a new business vision and find the road to sustainability.

The calamity had been turned into opportunity. We finally decided to permanently terminate chemical use and transform to organic agriculture. All the positive changes and miracles that befell on the land eventually spread to the farm and its entire business.

Company History

Half a century ago, this once a small family business was originated as a pioneering crude oil producer named Chalahan. The company sought to acquire its own sources of raw materials, leading it to buying farmlands in the province of Chanthaburi and cultivating special breed of MAWA coconut species which is renowned for its thick flesh and high tolerance to Thailand’s climate, as well as yielding high productivity.

Later in 1993, the company expanded and diversified its business into a coconut processing factory and officially established Merit Food Products Company (MFP). The MFP uses MAWA coconut as a base ingredient for all of its wide-ranging high-quality product lines.

Before becoming a sustainable coconut plantation as it is today, the company took a critical hit during the financial crisis in 1997 otherwise known as the Tom Yum Goong crisis. Along with Thailand’s declining economy, the company could no longer tolerate the rising costs of fertilizers and pesticides used in the farm. Even worse, the EI Nino kicked in at that same year and brought in a longer period of drought that devastated the plantation.

Nonetheless, a revered teaching from His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand helped brightened up the days. On one occasion where he visited Amphoe Suan Pueng in Ratchaburi Province, a deteriorating forest revealed lacking sign of soil mineral as a result of intensive mining in the area. His Majesty said, “To restore the forest, the only thing to do is to have people leave the forest, and nature will restore itself.”

Inspired by these words of wisdom, the founders pursued a new way of thinking that prohibited any usage of chemicals, restoring the coconut plantation through natural and organic methods. By letting nature heal itself, it took more than 3 years for these trees to fully recover and become truly organic.

Organic Plantation & Strategic Location

Our organic coconut plantation is one of the biggest of its kind ever owned by an individual in the country. The farm covers an entire 880-acre (2,200 rai) valley in Chanthaburi – a major province located 230-kilometer northeast of Bangkok. It supplies millions of fresh coconuts each year as raw material for the factory’s production lines.

Apart from the ecological way of growing without the use of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides, the plantation’s strategic location also contributes to maintaining its high-quality standards as a certified organic coconut farm. Owing to the neighborhood of the plantation, which is mostly surrounded by highlands and isolated from other farming areas, the crops are perfectly safe and free from chemical contamination and cross-breeding with alien strains of non-organic coconut.

The prime location of our factory is convenient for facilitating on-time delivery via all transportation modes – water, land, or air. It is located in close proximity to the Laem Chabang Port in the Eastern Seaboard Industrial Zone in Chonburi province and at only 70 km away from Suvarnabhumi International Airport. This reinforces our philosophy to provide products to consumers worldwide “fresh from farm to fork”.
